A Heart as Big as the World (9) - Another Exile

Family Mansion at St. Laurent du Verdon.

On 24 October 1802, he arrived  in Marseille after 11 years in exile.

What a disappointment awaited him! Due to a misunderstanding, there was no one on the pier to welcome him. He searched his mother in the crowds, but failed to find her.

Four days after his arrival in Aix, he had to leave his family for a family mansion in St. Laurent du Verdon to escape the military service with a lower price than in Aix.

As he was bored living in a small village, he wrote to his father:  “At the age of 21 years old,… I consider myself to be the oldest of men in this world.” (Letter to his Father, August  1, 1803)

After five months, he came back to Aix, tasted the pleasures of the city.

But quickly he wearied of the worldly vanities - meaningless, selfish calculation, petty jealousies,narrow-mindedness - which clashed with his sentiments of integrity and generosity.  He was thinking to go back to Sicily.

St. Eugene de Mazenod came back to Aix, tasted the pleasures of the city.
