Faithful Messenger

My brother and sisters in Christ,

We celebrate the feast of St. Luke, the evangelist, the author of the gospel who accompanied St. Paul in his journey.

The Gospel told us about Jesus who appointed seventy-two disciples. After that he sent them ahead of Him in pairs to every town and place He intended to visit. If we noticed, among the evangelists only Luke who wrote this story. We can interpret that Luke wants to show us that the disciples of Jesus are not limited to the twelve apostles. The followers of Jesus are many, and all of them become His messengers. Also, following Jesus is not limited by time. So everyone can be the disciples of Jesus, can be His messengers.

All of us here are the messengers of Jesus. We carry Jesus message to everyone around us.  What kind of message? It is to bring God’s kingdom and peace. There are so many ways we can proclaim it. However, the most effective way is through our life; the way we speak and act.  Jesus said: “Into whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this household.’ Or syalom or assalamualaikum. It is interesting that our fellow moslems practice it in their conversation and greetings.

We know and we have experienced also that becoming a messenger of Jesus sometimes is not easy. Especially if we are working in Moslems areas - like in Sulu or Cotabato. Some Moslems are very suspicious to other groups or other religions but most of them are very kind and friendly. Maybe during our mission we experience difficulty or even threat. However, Jesus assures us to be not afraid. He always helps and protects us. Nothing should hinder us from proclaiming the kingdom of God, the love of God.

We pray that we can imitate the example of St. Luke who was God’s faithful messenger. Amen.
