The Oblate Charism

The Oblate charism is actualized first of all and most effectively through a lived experience of Oblate life in community. An atmosphere and means are provided which help Oblates to discover experience and deepen the various elements of the charism. These elements are experienced gradually and progressively, often according to the here and now situation.

Jesus Christ
Formation centered on Jesus Christ experienced as Saviour;
A life which is a response to Him and His call;
A personal relationship with Him;
A continual discernment of His will;
Serving Him in the poor.

Lived personal knowledge of sacred scripture and sound theology;
Evangelizing from the world of the poor: this means taking on the mind and heart of one who is poor;
Evangelizing by witness as well as by prayer and word.

The Poor
Experiencing the poor at some point in formation;
Openness to being evangelized by them;
Favouring the poor in pastoral work;
Formation to social justice, including analysis of society and poverty and the social teachings of the Church;
A life-style of simplicity and poverty.

The Church
Growing in faith and love for the Church together with the Founder;
Living the formation community as Church, inserted into the local Church, and open to the mission of the universal Church;
Experiencing collaboration with lay people.

Living apostolic community through prayer, sharing, celebration, mutual trust and support, and the mission to the poor;
Discovering Christ forming the community for the mission;
Accepting guidance from the community in personal growth.

Religious life
Understanding and appreciating the value of religious life: radical following of Jesus, the Gospel values;
Living an apostolic religious life: mission-oriented;
Promoting personal integration through such means as prayer, discernment, spiritual direction.

Special devotion to Mary as our Mother and model of our faith and our service to the mission.

Priestly character of the Congregation
Preparing those who are called for the service of the Word and the Sacraments and the building up of Christian community;
Fostering an attitude of compassion and mercy;
Initiation into the role of the priest today, especially as animator of the laity.

Urgent needs of the Church
Learning to discern these needs with other Oblates;
Responding to these needs courageously;
Remaining open to the needs of the universal Church.

This discovering and maturing of the Oblate charism require time. The Oblates must not try to rush the process but allow each self to grow according to his rhythm and needs.
